How the Other Foundation works
Structure
The Other Foundation operates as a giving circle, not a registered nonprofit organization. We intentionally remain independent to maintain flexibility in our grantmaking, including the ability to fund individuals directly.
Sending Funds
Each member contributes $100 per month for a 12-month commitment. Contributions are electronically transferred to a designated trustee.
Award Distribution
Members vote monthly to determine which applicants receive funding. Several $1,000+ grants are awarded each month.
Who can apply
Eligible applicants include both registered nonprofit organizations and individuals with community-focused project ideas. All projects must serve the greater good of Birmingham, Alabama. Awards are structured as gifts; recipients should consult a tax professional regarding their individual circumstances.
About our Logo
The inspiration for our logo is the iconic "Storyteller" fountain in Birmingham's historic 5 Points South Neighborhood. Used with permission by the estate of its famed sculptor, Frank Fleming, the image is emblematic of Birmingham's unique cultural and artistic legacy.
The "Storyteller" has inspired wonder and intrigue for decades, and we believe he is the most appropriate local symbol for acknowledging those who are contributing to the magic of our city.
